The Cost of War

"Yes, they are getting ready for another war.  Why shouldn't they?  It pays high dividends."  - Major General Smedley Butler (United States Marine Corps) in War is a Racket

"Each day the war goes on the hatred increases in the heart of the Vietnamese and in the hearts of those of humanitarian instinct. The Americans are forcing even their friends into becoming their enemies. It is curious that the Americans, who calculate so carefully on the possibilities of military victory, do not realize that in the process they are incurring deep psychological and political defeat. The image of America will never again be the image of revolution, freedom and democracy, but the image of violence and militarism."  Reverend Martin Luther King  April 4, 1967

"Violence in any form is a tragic expression of our unmet needs."  - Marshall Rosenberg

The War Tapes

"The New York Times says The War Tapes is "Riveting! Compelling!" Entertainment Weekly refers to it as "the first indispensable Iraq documentary," and the Washington Post wrote that it should "be required viewing in every classroom and living room in America."

I'm the bastard child, the one who got
the head of Einstein and the soul of Pol Pot
No compassion, but I can split the atom...
Better give me a microscope - for a different eye
Better give me a telescope - for the inward sky

Peace Prayers

Over thirty wars are now being waged around the world. One in four children worldwide lives in these dangerous situations. In Iraq, an increasing number of children have been left to fend for themselves on the streets, making them targets for trafficking and sexual abuse; and there are reports of sexual violence and abduction of women and girls abound in Baghdad. In Liberia, women and children continue to be targets of rape and military recruitment from government militias and rebel groups that roam the countryside. Children as young as age six are forced into military service, and girls and women who resist risk physical mutilation or even murder.  From: SaveTheChildren

The greatest paradox is that it is religious fanaticism which has given rise to the most horrendous persecutions of humans by humans.  The problems and the great war conflicts can almost in all cases, be traced to acute ideological differences, giving rise to seeing each other as evil, wrong, in error, and therefore a threat religiously, politically, economically, or genetically.  The wars of conquest and political expansion were not just motivated by economic advantage, but justified by a view that those conquered were inferior, not as evolved, or less than human by some religious or theological belief....My deep point of conviction, based on the patterns of history, is that all critical indicators are that the general direction of human development is toward the more compassionate rather than towards the brutal and the competitive, and that the vast majority of individuals in the human population the planet over are oriented to peace rather than war, to compassion rather than competition.  -Neil Freer, God Games, What do you do forever?
